In February/March 2019 I undertake a big road trip – 5,000+ miles, 16 States, 4 time zones – across the USA from Florida to California. 

I heading out from Orlando and up to Atlanta, Georgia then Nashville, Tennessee. After that it’s onward through Kentucky to St Louis, Missouri then Kansas City, Kansas. 

From here we skirt the Nebraska/Iowa border through Sioux City and up to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Heading west we travel to Rapid City to take in Mount Rushmore before passing through Wyoming and Montana. From here we head south west to the Yellowstone National Park. 

Next it’s Idaho Falls and then Boise, Idaho before passing through Oregon and then down into Nevada taking in Lake Tahoe before finally reaching California heading to Santa Barbara and then ending in LA.

21 February 2019 Fly MAN-PHL-MCO. Pick up hire car and drive to Homosassa, FL. 101 miles in 2hr:40min. Timezone EST (GMT-5).

Over the next few days explore Citrus County, Crystal River and the Nature Coast.

26 February 2019 Drive from Homosassa, FL to Atlanta/Stockbridge, GA. 377 miles in 05hr:46min.

27 February 2019 Drive from Atlanta/Stockbridge, GA to Marion, IL. 460 miles in 06hr:58min via Nashville and through Kentucky. Change timezone CST (GMT-6).

28 February 2019 Drive from Marion, IL to Omaha, NE. 558 miles in 08hr:20min via St Louis & The Gateway Arch and Kansas City. Passing through IL, MO, KA, IA, NE.

01 March 2019 Drive from Omaha, NE to Rapid City, SD. 523 miles in 07hr:24min via Sioux Falls & Murdo, SD. Change timezone MST (GMT-7).

02 March 2019 From Rapid City, SD drive to Mount Rushmore then overnight again in Rapid City.

03 March 2019 Drive from Rapid City, SD to Gillette, WY. 169 miles in 02hr:43min via Devil’s Tower.

04 March 2019 Drive from Gillette, WY to Livingston, MT. 347 miles in 04hr:56min.

05 March 2019 From Livingston, MT drive to Yellowstone NP and Mammoth Hot Springs then overnight again in Livingston.

06 March 2019 From Livingston, MT drive the long way round as the National Park roads are closed for the winter to Jackson Hole, WY. 388 miles in 06hr:22min via I90, I15, US26 to Alpine, US 89, US191.

07 March 2019 From Jackson Hole, WY drive to Grand Teton NP then overnight again in Jackso Hole.

08 March 2019 Drive from Jackson Hole, WY to Boise, ID. 374 miles in 06hr:12min to visit friends.

09 March 2019 Day in Boise, ID. Drive to Bogus Basin ski resort in morning. Then a short flight over the area then a visit to the shooting range for pistol practise before an evening meal in Boise.

10 March 2019 Drive from Boise, ID to Bend, OR. 307 miles in 05hr:10min. Change timezone PST (GMT-8). Also change to DST.

11 March 2019 Drive from Bend, OR to Susanville, CA via Crater Lake. 305 miles in 05hr:19min.

12 March 2019 Drive from Susanville, CA via Reno, NV and Carson City, NV to South Lake Tahoe, CA. 142 miles in 02hr:24min.

13 March 2019 Tour around Lake Tahoe then overnight again in South Lake Tahoe, CA.

14 March 2019 Drive from South Lake Tahoe, CA to Lone Pine, CA along US395 through the Eastern Sierra mountains passing Topaz Lake and Mono Lake. 232 miles in 04hr:17min.

15 March 2019 Drive from Lone Pine, CA to Goleta, CA. 280 miles in 04hr:37min to visit friends for several days.

16 March 2019 Several days in and around Goleta, CA. Hikes in the hills and along the beach and visits to wineries.

21 March 2019 Drive from Goleta, CA to LAX. 106 miles in 02hr:18min. ending a total drive of over 5,500 miles and over 83 hours driving time. Now to fly LAX-LHR-MAN.

22 March 2019 Arrive MAN and home.

Steve holds the prestigious International Mountain Leader Award and also the Summer and Winter Mountain Leader Awards. He is a full member of BAIML and an adviser to Mountain Training UK&I. Steve has travelled extensively on six continents and has a wide experience, gained over more than thirty five years, of explorations and leading expeditions in remote environments on land – trekking in mountains, jungles, deserts and safaris and on water – rafting and canoeing. He works with his own clients and travel companies and takes adults and children on amazing adventures around the world. He has trained at and been assessed by Britain’s National Mountain Centres who are world class in the instruction and coaching of outdoor professionals. Steve is a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Accredited Expedition Assessor. He trains, supervises and assesses candidates on Bronze, Silver and Gold DofE Expeditions. He is a Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician, has an enhanced DBS disclosure and his own public liability insurance.
