In September 2017, working as a Challenge Leader for Action Challenge, I lead a group of 17 clients to attempt to summit Kilimanjaro, my eighth time on this mountain. Myself, my team doctor and 14 out of 17 clients successfully summit.

DAY 1 DEPARTURE FROM UK – FLY TO TANZANIA 

DAY 2 ARRIVE MOSHI – CLOSE TO KILIMANJARO

Transfer to our 3 star hotel. Welcome dinner and briefing from the leader, kit check & meet the local guides.

DAY 3 MACHAME CAMP / 3000M / 5-6HR TREK

Transfer to Machame Gate. Register with the Park Authority and then begin our Kilimanjaro climb with a trek through rainforest zone to the first camp where our tents and a welcome meal await.

DAY 4 SHIRA CAMP / 3840M/ 6-7HR TREK

An early morning start, and now with stunning views, it\’s a steep ascent through moorland up to the Shira Plateau where we camp and rest.

DAY 5 BARRANCO CAMP / 3950M / 6-7HR TREK

We trek through barron moon like landscape right up to Lava Tower for lunch,  and then down to the next camp. This \’trek high\’ – \’sleep low\’ day assists with the acclimatisation process.

DAY 6 BARAFU CAMP / 4600M / 6-7HR TREK

We scramble up and over the famous Barranco Wall, with fantastic views of Mt Meru in the distance. It\’s lunch at Karanga Camp and then onward & upwards to our high camp – and a welcome rest before the final push!

DAY 7 SUMMIT DAY / BARAFU CAMP/ 5895M / 12-13HR TREK

At midnight, by torch light, we head to the summit. Via Stella Point we make our final traverse to the roof of Africa! Then back to Barafu, and down to Millennium Camp where the thicker warm air feels great! 

DAY 8 MOSHI / 5-6HR TREK

After a big thankyou to the local crew, we descend on Mweka Trail to the Park gate. A transfer to our hotel and enjoy a shower and a celebratory dinner. Then a great night\’s sleep in a bed or party time for some!

DAY 9 FREE DAY IN MOSHI THEN EVENING FLIGHT BACK TO UK

DAY 10 ARRIVE HOME IN UK

Steve

Steve holds the prestigious International Mountain Leader Award and also the Summer and Winter Mountain Leader Awards. He is a full member of BAIML and an adviser to Mountain Training UK&I. Steve has travelled extensively on six continents and has a wide experience, gained over more than thirty five years, of explorations and leading expeditions in remote environments on land – trekking in mountains, jungles, deserts and safaris and on water – rafting and canoeing. He works with his own clients and travel companies and takes adults and children on amazing adventures around the world. He has trained at and been assessed by Britain’s National Mountain Centres who are world class in the instruction and coaching of outdoor professionals. Steve is a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Accredited Expedition Assessor. He trains, supervises and assesses candidates on Bronze, Silver and Gold DofE Expeditions. He is a Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician, has an enhanced DBS disclosure and his own public liability insurance.
