In August 2018 I lead back-to-back expeditions for Adventure Peaks to the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic in Russia to attempt to summit Mt Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe at 5,642m. This is my third and fourth time on Elbrus, this time from the south.\u00a0<\/p>\n

My 16-08 team of six clients and my local guide Alex who assemble in Cheget, acclimatise at Syltrankel lake and Mt Cheget and then travel to Azau and take the uplift to the barrels for our summit attempt.. On 24 August 2018 at 7:30am all six clients summit with me and my local guides.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Elbrus, 5642m, Europe’s highest peak and one of the Seven Summits is situated in the dramatic mountain range of the Caucasas.<\/p>\n

This expedition is arranged by\u00a0Adventure Peaks<\/a><\/p>\n

Day 1 International travel via Moscow<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Day 2 We arrive late morning in Mineralnye Vody\u00a0(Mineral Waters) just to the North of the Caucasus\u00a0mountain range. From here a 4-hour overland journey by\u00a0road past fields of sunflowers takes us to the Upper\u00a0Baksan Valley. We arrive at our hotel which will form the\u00a0main base for the expedition.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Day 3 From our hotel we drive to Verkhniy Baksan, here\u00a0we leave the main road and take the road as far as possible\u00a0up the Syltran-Su valley (ideally to 2300m, but will\u00a0depend on road conditions). At the end of the road we will\u00a0trek to Lake Syltrankel at 3000m, 3-4 hours, where we will\u00a0have lunch, set up our overnight camp, refresh skills and\u00a0relax.<\/p>\n

Day 4 Today we make our ascent of Mount Mukal\u00a0(3899m). We are\u00a0rewarded with\u00a0beautiful views across the Baksan valley towards Elbrus.<\/p>\n

Day 5 After packing up camp ready for the porters we\u00a0descend back to the valley and return to the hotel to make\u00a0our final preparations for the Elbrus summit bid.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Day 6 Today we take the cable car and chair lift to the\u00a0Barrels at 3800m on Elbrus (also called Bochky or\u00a0Karabashi, our base for the next few nights to further aid\u00a0the process of acclimatisation before our summit bid.\u00a0Whilst on the mountain the accommodation is more basic and excellent\u00a0food is\u00a0cooked for us. We\u00a0do\u00a0a further short acclimatisation walk to the old burnt down\u00a0Prijutt Refuge, 4060m.<\/p>\n

Day 7 Today our destination is the Pastukov Rocks\u00a0stretching from 4500-4700m, allowing us to practice\u00a0crampon work as well as being rewarded with good views\u00a0of Ushba, one of the most famous mountains of the region,\u00a0often described as the Matterhorn of the Caucasus. We\u00a0overnight at the Barrels.<\/p>\n

Day 8 Rest day<\/p>\n

Day 9 Summit day<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

We rise in the early hours and prepare for a 3am departure\u00a0for the highest point of Europe. We obtain a lift by Snowcat to around 4700m. The route from\u00a0here is a steady climb up to the Sedlowina Saddle, the col\u00a0between the two peaks of Elbrus. From here the final 300\u00a0metres of ascent to the West summit is on steeper snow\u00a0slopes. The ascent is approximately 8-12 hours round trip. I reach the summit at 10am with six of the seven clients and two local guides. We then return to the Barrels for lunch and then down to our hotel base in the\u00a0valley to celebrate.<\/p>\n
