Nearly every evening at dusk hundreds of thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats leave the Carlsbad cavern and fly south-east to feed in the Pecos and Black River valleys. The exodus can last from 20 minutes to 2.5 hours with a peak rate of about 5,000 bats per minute.
