France: Mont Blanc climb

Ice climbingFrom the French side we climb the Gouter Route (French grade PD-), which is the most frequented ascent route with little technical difficulty in good conditions, but exposed snow crests in the upper section. Teams rope up from the Cabane des Tete Rousse and wear helmets up to the Cabane des Gouter. En-route we cross a couloir reknowned for stone falls. This is the most dangerous part of the climb. At the Cabane des Gouter we leave all non-essential equipment and continue to the summit.

Ice climbingBased in the Hotel Mont Collon in Arolla, we spend a week of alpine mountaineering, rock and ice climbing in the Swiss Alps with some two-day journeys where we stay overnight in mountain refuges. The high point of this week is out successful summit of the Pigne d'Arolla (3790m altitude).

View from SH8 near Twizel looking across Lake Pukaki to the Southern Alps of the Mount Cook National ParkWe fly with Malaysia Airlines and Air New Zealand from the UK via Kuala Lumpur and Auckland to Wellington, our base for this trip. Flights are arranged through STA Travel. Accommodation is a pleasant two bedroom apartment in the centre of Wellington arranged through What's New.

On the North Island we explore the Tongariro National Park by walking the Tongariro Crossing renowned as a one-day hike that does it all, from alpine meadow to mountain summit with stunning volcanic features along the way.

On the South Island we visit several wineries and then explore the Aoraki Mount Cook National Park by taking a walk from Mount Cook village to Hooker Lake. We then move on to the West Coast and take a walk on the Fox Glacier.

Paragliding over CorvaraWe fly to Venice, pick up a hire car and drive to Arabba where we stay in the Chalet Belvedere.

From Arabba we journey out each day to successfully take on several Via Ferratas, including one of the most difficult - the VF Cesare Piazetta (graded 5C) to the summit of Piz Boe (3192m). On our scheduled rest day we go paragliding.

Our accommodation and car rental is arranged by Collett's Mountain Holidays

TipWe highly recommend Colletts

There are many good and very reasonably priced places to eat and drink in Arabba.

TipNote that, based on our experience, we do not recommend dining in the Sport Hotel
