Obelisk on Avienda 9 de JulioI first visit this country as part of an overland journey from Santiago to Tierra del Fuego. I enter Argentina at noon on 27 Dec 2005 by Road at the border with Chile at Chile Chico on the shores of the Lago General Carrera/Lago Beunos Aires (the lake changes name at the border!). Here begins our long journey south on route 40, the Camino/Cartereal Austral, to El Calafate.

See photographs of this country

We arrive at El Calafate at 2.20pm on 28 Dec 2005 and set up camp. Then we walk into town and deposit our dirty washing at the local laundry before an afternoon and evening of R&R. We drink at Casablanca and dine at Rick's Place (the old film influence doesn't go unnoticed.

29 Dec 2005 we have breakfast at 8.00am and then travel to the Moreno Glacier to trek and sail around and up close to the glacier. During the afternoon, whilst close to the ice face in our boat, we witness a most spectacular 'calving' as a huge piece of ice breaks away from the glacier and crashes into the lake. Moments later the flat lake surface is transformed with a one metre swell that rocks the boat. We return to El Calafate for more evening/night R&R.

We leave Argentina and cross back into Chile on 30 Dec 2005. A few days later we are on Tierra del Fuego and cross back into Argentina on route for Rio Grande and Ushuaia.

We arrive in Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, at 6.30pm on 3 Jan 2006 and camp at Rio Pipo by the Ushuaia Rugby Club. The next day we take a boat ride in the Beagle Channel to see the wildlife - sea lions, penguins, cormorants. In the afternoon we explore the cities museums, shops and pubs ... and in the evening/night we take in more R&R.

On 5 Jan 2006 we leave Ushuaia and fly to Beunos Aires for three nights. We arrive at BA in the early evening and the next day take a city tour and Tango Show. Later we dine in the Placa Dorrego where musicians play and dancers perform the Tango whilst we eat! Here I meet a couple who recommend a restaurant in the city centre to me.

On my last evening in BA I take up the recommendation and dine at 'La Estancia' on Lavalle, just off the main Avienda 9 de Julio near the Obelisk. Superb!
